If you were asked to compile a list of the most influential people in history
whose contributions helped make the world a better place, you may include Jesus
Christ, William Shakespeare, Christopher Columbus, Alexander Graham Bell,
Florence Nightingale, Albert Einstein, Henry Ford and many more. But two names
you'd probably not include or even recognise for that matter are Bob Kahn and
Vint Cerf. Who are these two guys, I hear you ask? They are the two geniuses who
in the early 1970s invented the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) which
basically is what allows the internet to operate. So you could say that these
guys are the proverbial 'fathers' of the internet.
What has this got to do with online football betting, I hear you yelling
at your computer screen. Everything in fact, because if it were not for Kahn and
Cerf (as well as a host of other smart people) the internet might not have been
invented and thus online betting sites or sportsbooks would not have been
possible. Gone are the days when you had no choice but to trundle down to your
local bookmaker come rain or shine to place a bet on your favourite football
team. Now you can place your wager online in just a few seconds with a few
clicks of your mouse, from the privacy and safety of your own home or office.
What's more, the internet has opened up football betting like never before
because it has turned the world into a 'global village.' This means that as an
avid football betting fan, you are no longer limited to betting on your own
football league or competitions. Thanks to online sportsbooks, you can wager on
the biggest international football leagues and competitions hosted all over the
world. For instance, online you can quickly and effortlessly bet on the
English
Premier League, Spain's 'La Liga',
Italy's 'Serie A' and even Germany's 'Bundesliga.'
The real joy of internet sports betting sites are the number of domestic and
international football competitions you can choose to bet on. For instance,
major English football competitions you can bet on include the coveted FA Cup,
the FA Community Shield, the Carling Cup and many more. In terms of
international football competitions, you can take your pick from such football
'betting bonanzas' as the
UEFA Champions League (Europe), the FIFA
Confederations Cup (Global), the CAF Champions League (Africa), the Copa América
(the Americas) and many others.
But the 'piece de resistance' of football wagering is the
FIFA World Cup because
it only comes around once every four years. Plus, the World Cup represents true
excellence in football and has national pride at stake. This competition
attracts hundreds of thousands of online football betting fans, which is growing
exponentially with each new World Cup campaign. In fact, ahead of the 2010 World
Cup in South Africa in June, online sportsbooks are preparing themselves to be
inundated with all manner of bets surrounding the big event. Already Spain,
Brazil, England and Argentina have emerged as the online betting favourites.
