Wigan Athletic Overview
Wigan Athletic FC is an English professional football club located in the town of Wigan in Greater Manchester which currently plays in the English Premier League. The club's roots go all the way back to 1897, with the founding of the region's first football side, Wigan County. For the next 35 years the club closed down and was reborn in many different incantations including Wigan United, Wigan Town and Wigan Borough. But it was only in 1932 Wigan Athletic was born.

And between then and now Wigan Athletic's fortunes have been mixed. Before the team was finally allowed to join the Football League in 1978, it enjoyed much success, but as a league team it faced far stiffer competition. However, if there was a standout season for the club, it must have been the 1995-1996 season, where players like Isidro Diaz and Roberto Martínez showed off their skills to great affect. But the team floundered soon after and it was only in the 2004/2005 season that the team's fortunes really turned around, as that was the season in which Wigan Athletic was promoted to the coveted Premier League where it has remained since.

The Wigan Athletic uniform consists of a blue and white striped jersey, blue shorts and white socks.

Manager
Roberto Martínez is currently the manager of Wigan Athletic, who used to play for the team in the 1990's. He took over as manager in 2009 from Steve Bruce (himself a former player turned manager) after he left the club to manage Sunderland FC.
