European Blackjack Rules

The basic aim of European blackjack is to get as close to 21 as possible without going bust. A winning hand is one that is closer to 21 than the dealer's hand. The standard rules of splitting, doubling down and insurance all apply - but these differ slightly in European blackjack. Although the rules are quite similar to regular blackjack, the game is different enough to stand on its own as a separate game.

Just a basic understanding of how blackjack works will give you a good enough indication as to how European blackjack functions.

This is how European blackjack works:

  • This game uses two standard card decks.
  • This is always the winning hand - no Five Card Tricks.
  • You are allowed to draw up to 11 cards (9 more than your original 2).
  • The dealer has to stand on any hand with the value of 17 or more - this includes both hard and soft 17s.
  • Blackjack pays out 3:2 - however, if the dealer also has blackjack then the hands are pushed and you keep your original bet.
  • If the dealer gets blackjack and you do not, you will lose every bet that you have placed - this includes splitting and doubling down.
Each version of blackjack has its own appeal in its own right. There is no right or wrong answer to the question of which version of blackjack is the one for you. Some versions allow you to play slower where other versions like multi hand blackjack ensure that you receive as much of an adrenalin rush as possible. Trial and error is the best way to see which version of blackjack will best suit your playing style. There is no harm in trying them all because once you have a basic understanding of one type you will not struggle to adapt your game to a new style.

The online community demands the best that online casinos have to offer. This is not only in terms of customer service, welcome bonuses and promotions - there are always new casinos that offer what seem to be incredible offers. What is more important to customers of online casinos is the quality of the games that they offer. This is why we gamble online - for the games. When you take a game like blackjack that has been around for centuries it is only common sense that this game will have evolved into different formats. One such version of blackjack is European blackjack.
