It is all fine and well to know the basic rules of craps, but if you are not
familiar with the terminology of the game then you may find yourself feeling a
bit lost. These are some of the most used terms in craps with brief
explanations.
| Any seven |
A bet on one throw of the dice for a combination of 7 which pays
out 4:1. |
| Barred number |
In some cases the bet will be pushed with the numbers 2 or 12. |
| Bet across numbers |
This is a bet across all the place numbers, excluding the
point. |
| Big six/eight |
A bet on 6 or 8 being rolled before 7 and pays 1:1. |
| Box point |
The numbers which include 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10. |
| Buy bet |
A true odds bet that carries a 5% fee. |
| Come bet |
This is placed once the point is established and pays 1:1. |
| Come out roll |
This is the first throw of the dice by a new shooter. |
| Craps |
The nickname given to a throw of 2, 3, or 12. |
| Don't come |
Works the same as don't pass bets and pays 1:1. |
| Don't pass bet |
A bet that the shooter will not hit the point before a 7 - pays
1:1. |
| Field bet |
A bet on one throw that 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 12 will hit. |
| Free odds |
Allows players to bet on true odds with pass and come bets - only
available at certain casinos. |
| High/Low |
This is a bet on one throw of the dice that 2 or 12 will hit and pays
30:1. |
| Horn bet |
This is a bet on 2, 3, 11 and 12. |
| House |
This refers to the casino. |
| Inside bet |
This is a straight bet on 5, 6, 8, 9. |
| Natural |
This is when a 7 or 11 is hit on the come out roll. |
| Odds bet |
This is an extra bet on pass line, don't pass line, come and don't
come bets that the shooter will make the point. |
| Outside bets |
This is a place bet on 4, 5, 9, 10. |
| Pass line bet |
A bet that will win if 7 or 11 is rolled in the come out roll or
if not then on the point being hit before the shooter hits a 7 . |
| Place bets |
This is a bet that 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10 will come up before 7. |
| Point number |
This is the number that is established on the come out roll is not
2, 3, 7, 11 or 12. |
| Seven out |
This is when the shooter hits a 7 and loses once the point has been
established. |
| Shooter |
This is the person who throws the dice. |
| Table limit |
This is the highest and lowest bets that a player can place. |
| Three way craps |
This is a bet on one throw on each of the three craps numbers. |
| Vigorish |
This is a 5% premium paid to the casino on a bet on 4 or 10 to get 2:1
odds. |
