Yup folks, it's that time of the year when the planet's greatest golfers are
about to descend on Britain for the only major golfing championship (of the
four) not played in the United States.
In preparation for the141st Open, which starts on Thursday next week (July 19)
and runs until Sunday (July 22) at Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club in Lytham
St. Annes, Lancashire, England, UK sportsbook William Hill has posted a range of
competitive 2012 Open Championship betting lines.
WillHill has laid Tiger Woods as the Favourite
Interestingly, in terms of its outright winner Open Championship betting market,
WillHill has laid American Tiger Woods as the early favourite. The reason for
this is because following the scandal in 2009 that ended Woods' marriage and
effectively killed his form (rendering him winless in 2010 and 2011), he seems
to have regained some of his winning form this year.
Fans of Tiger cheered when he chalked up victories in the Arnold Palmer
Invitational in March, the Memorial Tournament in June and most recently the
AT&T National earlier this month. So with three impressive wins in three
consecutive months under his belt, it's no wonder William Hill has laid him as
the 7/1 favourite next week.
These recent successes have propelled Tiger back up the Official World Gold
rankings into the number four spot, behind England's Lee Westwood in number
three, Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy in number two and England's Luke Donald
in the number one spot.
World # 1 Luke Donald is only the 5th Favourite
Interestingly, despite his world number one status, Donald is only the fifth
betting favourite on 18/1 odds to win the Open, behind Rory McIlroy and Padraig
Harrington on 16/1 odds, Lee Westwood on 12/1 odds and, of course, Woods as the
current favourite.
But as to who will reign supreme next week, only time will tell. One thing is
for sure, which is that Tiger will bring his A-game as he is long overdue a win
in a major. For my betting buck, South African Ernie Els still has some big wins
left in him yet, even though he has been posted as a relative 40/1 long shot at
WillHill.
