US Powerball Review
Over the next several months, the lottery is expected to add two more
jurisdictions to bring the total to 45. The lottery is operated by the
Multi-State Lottery Association and LOTTERY INFORMATION: Just $1 buys a
participant a chance to win several million dollars in Powerball. With a jackpot
also starting at $20 million, it will grow until it is won.
Powerball has been around since 1988, but at that point it was known as
LottoAmerica. The name and the game were then changed to Powerball in 1992.
Drawings are held each Wednesday and Saturday night and players select five
numbers from a set of 59 white balls on one Powerball number in between 1 and
39. All five numbers must be hit, including the Powerball to win the jackpot.
Winners can either take the cash option or select a graduated annuity.
The latter option is paid in 20 instalments over 29 years. All non jackpot
prizes are fixed amounts, but the jackpot can vary from $20 million to as much
as several hundred million.
The largest payout was a single ticket on February 18, 2006 worth $365
million.
