The UK philanthropist and life peer, Baroness Neuberger, has been elected by
the UK Gambling Commission to head a unique Independent Strategy Board
which role will be to advise the Commission on responsible gambling strategies.
Baroness Neuberger will assist the UK Gambling Commission - and therefore the
government - on ways to coordinate research and educational programs in order to
ensure that a viable and responsible gambling strategy can be followed by the
United Kingdom.
Baroness Neuberger, who was appointed by the UK Prime Minister as the
country's Champion in Volunteering last year, said about her latest election: "I
have a longstanding interest in research methodologies and outcomes across the
sciences and social sciences, and have had a considerable interest in addiction
in the past, from alcohol to illegal drugs, and from cigarettes to gambling. I
look forward to this challenging role, and hope to be able to help bring some
coherence to national research, education and treatment programs related to
gambling."
The Independent Strategy Board, with Baroness Neuberger at its head, will
consist of 10 members, and will convene for the first time in 2009. It is hoped
that the board will be able to develop a national program that will minimize the
risk of gambling in England, as well as Wales and Scotland.
The Chairman of the Gambling Commission, Brian Pomeroy said: "Baroness
Neuberger's wealth of experience in the public health field and her expert
understanding of medical research and addiction will be invaluable to the new
Independent Strategy Board."
