The UK Gambling Commission has put out the results of an interesting study
that it commissioned, showing that remote gambling was on the rise in the
country.
According to ICM Research, a company that was commissioned to undertake the
study on behalf of the Gambling Commission, there has been an increase in the
number of adults who enjoy wagering via the internet or digital TV.
The research showed that out of the 8,000 adults questioned, 9.7% said that
they had gambled using remote devices in the past month. These figures are up
from the 8.8% that was revealed in 2007 and 7.2% in 2006.
If the National Lottery games were to be taken out of the equation, it is
believed that only 5.2% of those questioned enjoy remote gambling. The
National Lottery games now available online attract thousands of players who
actively take part in this pastime on the internet every single week. The UK
Gambling Commission believes that the Lottery played a huge part in the 0.9%
growth of remote gambling, compared to the previous year.
As noted, gambling on the National Lottery was the most popular of all the
remote gambling pastimes, with 7.1 percent of the participants showing that this
was their number one choice. Sports betting and National Lottery scratch cards
came in second with 2.4%. Poker and other lotteries made up just 1.7% of the
total number of UK players, over 1% enjoyed online bingo, while the smallest
group - under 1% - made up for all other casino pastimes.
