Baroness Neuberger, who was asked by the UK Gambling Commission to
form an advisory board that would help formulate the framework for a national
responsible gambling strategy, has named the new members of the board.
The new board will consist of the following experts, all of which have
considerable talents in fields relating to gambling, public health, addiction
management and social research:
Paul Bellringer, Dr. Sian Griffiths, Richard Ives, David Miers, Neil Goulden, Dr. Henrietta Bowden-Jones,
David Guy, Alan Jamieson and Dr. Gerda Reith
Baroness Neuberger was clearly proud of the new Strategy Board. "I am very
pleased to be able to bring together so many talented and experienced
individuals," she said. "Their collective expertise is extraordinary and, while
our remit is challenging, I am confident that, together, we will deliver a
robust British strategic framework for research, education and treatment."
The main aim of the new board will be to develop a national program that
would minimize the risks of gambling in the United Kingdom and outline how this
could be achieved through education and research.
In addition, the National Gambling Commission said that it had commissioned
the National Center for Social Research (NatCen) to run the British Gambling
Prevalence Survey next year.
The Chief Executive of the Gambling Commission, Jenny Williams said: "We are
very pleased to have NatCen on board for this project. They have over thirty
years of experience of large scale surveys of this nature, a proven track record
of working with a range of public sector bodies and a sound understanding of
gambling related issues. Their experience in researching sensitive issues and
complex stakeholder management is extensive."
