After being granted a license to open what it defined as a 'small casino'
under the UK Gambling Act of 2005, the Scarborough Council is holding an
open day to attract potential operators and investors.
The casino open day is scheduled for September 24, and the council is hoping
to lure all those interested in getting involved in the building of the town's
second casino on the day.
The United Kingdom granted eight 'small casino' licenses to local authorities
across the country - Scarborough being one of them. Others to be granted
licenses include Wolverhampton and Swansea.
Scarborough council said that the new casino would contain a gaming area with
minimum dimensions of 750 square meters of casino floor.
Gaming regulations allow up to 80 gaming machines in Category B. Jackpots may
not exceed £ 4,000.
The idea for an open day has been warmly welcomed by the gaming community
hoping to become involved in the new casino.
"There's been a good, positive response from people wanting to attend the
open day," said a Scarborough Council cabinet member, Derek Bastiman. "The idea
is to show them the benefits of Scarborough, how well it is doing and what they
can expect from the town."
Not everybody is keen on the idea of building a second casino in Scarborough,
of course. Labor councilor, Eric Broadbent said: "In the current economic
climate, building a second casino might not be a great idea. I'm impressed with
the one we have now, but if we build another we might find that we end up with
two underused casinos."
