Who will be the Ireland's next new European Union Commissioner?
That's the question on everyone's lips and those who think they know the
answer are backing their favourites at betting sites around the country.
Paddy Power has posted interesting odds on who will represent the
Emerald Isle as the next European Commissioner to replace Charlie McCreevy.
Topping its list is Maire Geoghegan Quinn. Friday's odds had her taking on
the role at 1/2, followed behind by Pat Cox at 13/8.
Eion Ryan is set at number three on the list, with odds posted at 6/1.
But the most interesting entry has been Catherine Day, who served as
Secretary General of the European Commission, and who had been in her position
since 2005.
Day's experience with the Barroso Commission, where she served until Jose
Manuel Barroso, is seen to be to her advantage to take on the role as new EU
Commissioner.
Speaking about Catherine Day's fourth place on the list with odds of 8/1, a
spokesperson for Paddy Power said: "Catherine's previous role in the EU saw her
working closely with Barroso so we believe this race is far from over and she
could very well be the dark horse worth keeping an eye on."
Odds for Ireland's next European Union Commission were as follows at Paddy
Power:
- Maire Geoghegan Quinn - 2/1
- Pat Cox - 13/8
- Eoin Ryan - 6/1
- Catherine Day 8/1
- Mary Coughlan - 20/1
- Ruairi Quinn - 40/1
- John Bruton - 50/1
