UK Groups Eye Estonian Market

by Renee Israel

Estonia is relaxing it's online gambling laws

Estonians love to gamble, and the government is hoping that this pastime will help pull the East European country out of the recession in the long run.

Unlike other Eastern European countries such as Russia, Estonia is relaxing its gambling laws and it is believed that by early next year, international operators will play an important part in developing a strong online gambling market in the country.

As such, UK gambling groups are eying Estonia as a potentially interesting market and are watching as things develop.

There are currently 1.5 million Estonians who share a very impressive 150 land based casinos in 12 different cities.

The government is hoping to stimulate the country's cash-strapped economy by offering online gambling in Estonia through a two step process.

The first will be to allow online gambling on a national level from this year already, and then on an international level from January 2011.

The latter stage is when UK gambling groups will hopefully step in to offer quality gaming services to Estonians.

With the economy down a staggering 36%, the government is willing to do all and everything to save the country and put it back on the right track.

Estonia is on the verge of adopting the Euro which it believes will bring stability to its wobbly economy.

Estonia will be able to offer licenses to international gambling companies which will see millions of Euros enter state coffers annually.

"With the economy down a staggering 36" - I think -16 is the actual figure for GDP in 2009.
