The Chief Executive Officer of one of the UK's leading gambling groups has
said he will be stepping down from his post after heading Ladbrokes for
the past nine years.
Christopher Bell has been criticized in recent months over a number of
issues, including the lack of international growth in Ladbrokes' online
division.
He was also accused of "arrogance" after banning Ladbrokes staff from flying
British Airways, after his daughter had a bad experience with the airline. The
case has since been resolved and the 'ban' lift.
Bell's departure has triggered a major search for a replacement, although no
definite names have been proposed as yet.
According to Bell, there are "very good people" within the company who would
be ready and able to take over the role, however he said that he ultimate
decision rested with the board.
A spokesperson for Ladbrokes would not comment much on Bell's departure,
except to say that internal and external replacements would be considered and an
announcement would be made at the appropriate time.
Bell said that his replacement would need to have a "huge passion" for the UK
gambling industry.
In addition, he or she would need to have the know how in running one of the
biggest retail operations in the UK.
Bell has been with Ladbrokes for the past 20 years in one capacity or
another.
"It's the most fabulous job anybody could have, but it is a huge job and I'm
pleased to be passing the baton on to somebody else because it's time for a
change and - to be frank - time for a little rest too," said Bell.
