William Hill Sniffs out Centrebet Deal

by Ryan D. Jaeger

William Hill rumoured to want to buy Centrebet

Recently, the Sunday Times reported that one of the most serious groups who wish to acquire Centrebet is the UK bookie, William Hill.

The newspaper said that a team of executives from the UK group have already flown into Australia to try and advance the deal.

It is believed that several top gambling groups are interested in getting their hands on Centrebet which is worth an approximate £80 million.

The Australian gambling market has certainly been buzzing with activity in recent months.

The government has been moving away from its prohibition policy and has admitted that regulating the online gambling industry may be a better idea after all.

"I think Australia is going to be squarely on the map of a lot of those international businesses, so you will probably see more players come into the market," said Andrew Twaits, Betfair's representative in Australia.

"William Hill, Ladbrokes and Coral are companies I would expect, whether it's through acquisitions or starting up themselves, to look at entering the Australian market at some point in the next year or so."

Centrebet first announced its intentions of 'putting itself out there' after it revealed that it had received several acquisition proposals.

While no agreement has been reached yet, it is believed that a UK gambling group has a good chance to finalize a deal with the company.
