Inter Milan could make history in the next few weeks by becoming the first Italian club to win the coveted treble, the Coppa Italia,
Serie A and the UEFA Champions League, as it already has one of the three under its belt.
Last night (Wednesday, May 5) Inter Milan took on its closest Serie A rivals, AS Roma, only in the final of the Coppa Italia, which saw Inter's Diego Milito skillfully outplay three AS defenders in the 40th minute to find the back of Roma's net to make it 1-0.
And try as they did, AS Roma failed to equalize for the rest of the match. This gave Inter Milan the 2009-10 Coppa Italia title and even more confidence that they can pull off the prestigious treble. AS Roma, meanwhile, will no doubt be licking their wounds.
However, the match also took its toll on Inter Milan, as two of its key players left the pitch injured - playmaker Wesley Sneijder and defender Ivan Cordoba. It is unknown whether either of the two players will be able to play in the club's upcoming matches.
But with the Coppa Italia out of the way, arguably the least important of the three tournaments, Inter Milan can focus solely on Serie A and the Champions League. With just two games left to play in Serie A this season, Inter leads AS Roma 76 to 74 points.
If Inter can win its next two games, there is little doubt that it will add the Serie A title to its list of achievements this season to make it two titles, with just the UEFA Champions League title remaining. This weekend Inter plays 12th ranked Chievo in Serie A.
On May 22 Inter Milan will face German club Bayern Munich in Madrid for the UEFA Champions League title. If Inter Milan pulls off the treble, Inter will be the toast of Milan and AS Roma fans will be left fuming.
