On Sunday Chelsea trounced Wigan 8-0 and in doing so secured the
2009/2010 English Premier League title, the first time The Blues have won
the competition in four years, preventing runners-up Manchester United from
making it four in a row.
Obviously ecstatic at the result (apart from the millions of Chelsea fans in
England and abroad as well as the team itself) was the side's top-rated manager
Carlo Ancelotti of Italy, who only joined the West London club last summer as
part of a three-year deal.
'I hope to stay here a long time and win a lot of titles,' said a grinning
Ancelotti. 'We have a very good squad, for next year and the years after.' No
doubt Chelsea's infamous owner, Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, must also
have been thrilled at the result.
The only person unhappy with Chelsea's success (other than everyone associated
with the other 19 English Premier League teams) is former Chelsea manager José
Mourinho of Spain, who was unceremoniously sacked by Abramovich in September,
2007.
On Monday last week there was only a single point separating Chelsea and
Manchester United, with fans of both teams hoping that the week's remaining two
games of the League would put them ahead. But alas for the Red Devils, Chelsea
scored more goals.
It all came down to the final game on Sunday, Chelsea playing Wigan and
Manchester United playing Stoke City. And while Man U ran rings around Stoke to
win 4-0, Chelsea fared even better against Wigan, scoring an unprecedented eight
goals to Wigan's nil.
And so the English Premier League has come to an end for another year. Burnley,
Hull City and Portsmouth have been relegated to the Football League, while
Newcastle, West Bromwich and Nottingham Forest have been promoted to the Premier
League.
