Bookmakers like
Paddy Powerr and
888 Sport have lengthened out the odds on England winning the World Cup to
15/2 from 7/1 after the shock announcement of captain Rio Ferdinand's exit from
the tournament.
This massive odds shift shows how important the bookies rate Ferdinand's role
in England's chances - they are basically making England an outside chance now.
This is reflected in comments from bookies like Paddy Power: "Rio Ferdinand's
exit from the World Cup is a big blow to England's World Cup hopes and that has
to be reflected in the longer odds available on a Three Lions victory. So it's
now 15/2 that we see Steven Gerrard lifting the trophy for England on July 12.'
As a result of the news, Argentina are now the third favourites to win
the Cup at 13/2 from 7/1. Ivory Coast's odds have also drifted to 50/1 from 40/1
following the news Didier Drogba's possible exit due to a fractured forearm he
picked up againts Japan.
