Chile look like they will win Group H after Spain failed to take even a point from their opening fixture against Switzerland. Spain were betting favourites to win the 2010 World Cup, but those odds will now be a lot bigger after they could not break down the sound defense of the Swiss.
In the opening Group H match on Wednesday Chile showed tremendous flair and desire to attack in a highly entertaining 1-0 win against a game Honduras team. With Switzerland and Chile now on three points each there is a real chance that Spain might not even qualify for the next round. Of even more concern for those simple folk who bet on Spain to win it all is that they now seem likely to face Brazil in the last 16 if they do qualify.
Brazil are odds-on favourites to win their group especially as they were the only team to emerge from the opening round of games with the full 3 points. They will face the runners-up in Group H, and Spain could well have to settle for that berth after the shock loss yesterday.
Spain complained after the game that Switzerland did not deserve to win due to their negative style. Turn those sour grapes into wine my economically unsound amigos, because no one is listening to the litany of excuses. Spain always flatters to deceive in the World Cup and 2010 will be no different unless there is amazing and quick improvement.
Chile were full value for their opening win and they are now at the top of bookies betting boards to win Group H and advance to face either Portugal or Ivory Coast in what should be a thrilling last 16 clash, although we are getting ahead of ourselves with many games still to be decided before that potentially happens.
