Barcelona Starts La Liga Season Off With A Bang

by Ryan D. Jaeger

Barcelona has won it's first match in the La Liga

This weekend Spanish football fans settled in for the start of the 2010-11 La Liga football season and, as expected, last season's champions Barcelona kicked off the season with a bang by dispatching Racing Santander 3-0.

But while fans watched their chosen teams do battle, what soon became apparent - even after just the first game of the new season - is that there is a vast divide between the few top teams in La Liga and all the other, begging an important question.

Is this season also going to become the Barcelona and Real Madrid show? From our point of view we hope not. While there's no denying how well Barcelona's management has invested millions of dollars in the team, could it make the league boring?

We all recall the Michael Schumacher years in Formula 1. Although racing fans the world over loved to watch the German win race after race with the kind of skill and precision most racing drivers would kill for, he ultimately made F1 boring.

Just like it was no surprise that a team of Barcelona's caliber thumped Racing Santander on the weekend, it may have shown Spanish football fans what they could be in for in the coming months. But it was not all good news for the top teams.

Real Madrid, which over the last two years has spent over $400 million on new players (some good and some bad), had a poor opening game by drawing 0-0 with R.C.D. Mallorca, a La Liga side Los Blancos should have beaten in their sleep.

So one game in, Real Madrid, who is determined to take down arch rivals Barcelona this season, are already on the back foot with 1 point to Barcelona's 3. Also on 3 points are Sevilla, Valencia, R.C.D. Espanyol, Real Sociedad and Athletic Club.

Here are the full La Liga football results from the weekend:

Hércules C.F.  0-1  Athletic Club
Málaga C.F.  1-3  Valencia C.F.
R.C.D. Espanyol  3-1  Getafe C.F.
C. At. Osasuna  0-0  U.D. Almería
Real Sociedad  1-0  Villarreal C.F.
Levante U.D.  1-4  Sevilla F.C.
R.C. Deportivo  0-0  Real Zaragoza CD
R.C.D. Mallorca  0-0  Real Madrid C.F.
Real Racing Club  0-3  F.C. Barcelona
At. de Madrid  4-0  Real S. de Gijón
