Cricket In Crisis Over Latest Match Fixing Claims

by Renee Israel

Pakistan cricketers might be implicated in match fixing scam

All hell broke lose in the cricket world after the British tabloid, News of the World, published evidence that players from Pakistan's international team were involved in match fixing in a Test match against England last week.

An agent for a number of players was videotaped accepting cash to the tune of £150,000 and predicting when three no balls would be bowled in the match.

The agent, Mazhar Majeed was arrested soon after by Scotland Yard and charged with match fixing and the intention to defraud bookmakers.

Three more people have now been arrested for their involvement in the case, according to the police.

Two men and a woman, all based in London, were questioned by customs officials under suspicion of money laundering .

The police also interviewed Pakistani players Mohammed Asif and Mohammand Amir, both of whom bowled the no balls exactly when it was predicted by their agent, and allegedly in exchange for money.

Captain Salman Butt and Kamran Akmal, the wicketkeeper, were also interviewed, although the latter has since been ruled out of the inquiry.

The Pakistani players who are still under investigation will attend a special meeting with officials in London, and UK cricket officials have said that they do not believe that they should continue playing.

They definitely will not be playing in the upcoming series of one day internationals against England, said officials.

The ICC is waiting for the police to complete their investigations before deciding on future steps.

"Make no mistake, once the process is complete, if any players are found to be guilty, the ICC will ensure that the appropriate punishment is handed out," said the CE of the International Cricket Council, Hoorat Lorgat. "We will not tolerate corruption in this great game."
