Borussia Dortmund Beats Hannover 96 4-1 In Bundesliga

by Ryan D. Jaeger

Borussia Dortmund beat Hannover 96 4-1 on Saturday

On Saturday, Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund extended their lead to 65 points when they trounced number four team Hannover 96 4-1, with a display of footballing prowess that will be hard to keep them from snatching the title.

Interestingly, despite the final scoreline, neither team scored in the first half, as the defensive games of both teams were very strong. The second half, however, was a different story, and home side Hannover opened the scoring in the 57th minute.

That goal was courtesy of Norwegian forward Mohammed Abdellaoue. But the joy of the mainly Hannover supporters was short-lived when barely two minutes later Borussia equalised with a superb effort from attacking midfielder Mario Götze.

Tied at 1-1, both teams hunkered down for the rest of the half, but it was Borussia Dortmund that was clearly the more fired up of the two teams, proven when just five minutes after they equalised, talented center forward Lucas Barrios made it 2-1.

Now it was the turn of Borussia Dortmund's fans to celebrate as their team grabbed the lead and looked set to increase the scoreline even more. And in the 73rd minute, Barrios scored his second goal of the match, and the third for Borussia.

The final nail in Hannover's 'coffin' came in the 83rd minute when Borussia Dortmund's striker Kevin Großkreutz slipped one past Hannover's hapless goalkeeper Florian Fromlowitz to make it 4-1, which was the final score at the full time whistle.

The victory was an important one for Borussia because as the season winds down, every victory - worth 3 points - makes it that much harder to catch them. Their closest rivals are second place team Bayer 04 Leverkusen who are sitting on 58 points.

Here are the final Bundesliga results from the weekend:

Borussia M'gladbach 0-1 1. FC Kaiserslautern
Hamburger SV 6-2 1. FC Köln
Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 FC St. Pauli
SC Freiburg 1-2 FC Bayern München
Hannover 96 2-0 1899 Hoffenheim
1. FC Nürnberg 1-3 SV Werder Bremen
Borussia Dortmund 1-1 1. FSV Mainz 05
Bayer 04 Leverkusen 2-0 FC Schalke 04
VfB Stuttgart 1-1 VfL Wolfsburg
