Dortmund In Shock Loss To M'gladbach In Bundesliga

by Anton Johan

Borussia M'gladbach beat Borussia Dortmund 1-0 on Saturday

With German premier league football club Borussia Dortmund within spitting distance of winning the 2010/11 Bundesliga title, fans of the club were dumbstruck when the league leaders were defeated 1-0 by lowly Borussia M'gladbach on Saturday.

Borussia M'gladbach, who are facing certain relegation this season, left Borussia Dortmund stunned by pulling of a feat few other Bundesliga teams have this season, thanks to the sole goal of the match from striker Mohammadou Idrissou in the 35th minute.

As part of a counterattack, the Cameroonian put on a dazzling display as he outmaneuvered Dortmund defender Neven Subotic to gave himself enough time and space to pick his spot, and send the ball goalward beyond the reach of goalie Roman Weidenfeller.

Try as they did, Dortmund failed to equalise in the remainder of the half, or in the second. Said Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp after the game, 'A draw would have been deserved. We had our opportunities and were the dominant team. We'll be back.'

Despite their shock loss, Borussia Dortmund are still ahead in the Bundesliga standings with 69 points. However, by winning their game against 1899 Hoffenheim 2-1 on Saturday, second place club Bayer 04 Leverkusen closed the gap to just five points.

Which means if Dortmund blunder again like they did on Saturday with three games left to play, and Bayer 04 Leverkusen wins all of their matches, they could be pipped at the post, scuppering their chances of winning their first title since the 2001/2 season.

On Saturday Dortmund will face FC Nürnberg, a far stronger side than Borussia M'gladbach, which is why Dortmund fans will be nervous ahead of the game. Bayer 04 Leverkusen, meanwhile, will play 1. FC Köln, who should be relatively easy pickings.

Here are the complete Bundesliga results from last weekend:

SC Freiburg 1-3 Hannover 96
FC Schalke 04 0-1 1. FC Kaiserslautern
Bayer 04 Leverkusen 2-1 1899 Hoffenheim
VfB Stuttgart 3-0 Hamburger SV
Eintracht Frankfurt 1-1 FC Bayern München
FC St. Pauli 1-3 SV Werder Bremen
Borussia M'gladbach 1-0 Borussia Dortmund
VfL Wolfsburg 4-1 1. FC Köln
1. FC Nürnberg 0-0 1. FSV Mainz 05
