Even though right now Spanish powerhouses FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are contemplating their important second UEFA Champions League Semi Final match at Camp Nou this evening, whatever the result both teams will still have to focus on the rest of the La Liga season.
While the UEFA Champions League is a very prestigious football competition that encompasses the best premier football divisions from across Europe, the La Liga championship is Spain's foremost domestic football competition, and no less important for Spanish clubs or their supporters.
Which is why Barcelona and Real Madrid fans were extremely disappointed when their sides lost their respective La Liga matches last Saturday, to far weaker opponents in both cases. Barcelona went down 1-2 to Real Sociedad, while Real Madrid was defeated 2-3 by Real Zaragoza CD.
Especially upset were La Liga betting fans, who expected the two best clubs in the league to be a shoe-in to win their matches, especially with the 2010/11 La Liga title so close to being decided. But with so few games left this season, Real Madrid is the team that needs to worry the most.
Barcelona have an eight point buffer over second place Real Madrid, and being so late in the season will most probably need a miracle to stop Barcelona from clinching the coveted La Liga title, never mind stop Barca from knocking them out of the Champions League as they are a game behind.
From a La Liga betting perspective, next up Barcelona will take on Espanyol on Sunday while Real Madrid will take on Sevilla F.C. on Saturday. And despite their recent and unexpected losses, both Barcelona and Real Madrid will start as the La Liga betting favorites.
