The last round of the league stage of the Premier League Darts 2012
takes place tomorrow (Thursday) at Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle.
Five players are vying for the two remaining spots for the play-offs. Top seed
Phil Taylor and fifth seed Simon Whitlock have already secured their play-off
places. Fourth seed Gary Anderson is at the bottom of the table with no hope of
making it to the last four. Therefore the match between Taylor and Anderson is
only of academic interest. But the remaining three matches will be keenly
fought.
Adrian Lewis, the reigning world champion and second seed in the Premier
League Darts 2012, will be playing Whitlock. If Lewis wins, he will be through
to the play-offs. But if he loses or tie, he will have to depend on some crazy
results in the other relevant matches.
The third match of the final round of the Premier League Darts 2012 is
between James Wade and Raymond Van Barneveld. The winner will go through, but if
the match is tied than the outcomes of the other matches will come into play.
There is a possibility of both Wade and Van Barneveld making the playoffs if
they tie, but that will be the last thing on their minds.
The last pairing is between Kevin Painter and Andy Hamilton. For both of them
it was their first appearance in the Premier League Darts. Theoretically, the
winner of this contest can go through to the pay-offs depending on the outcome
of the other contests.
Hamilton comes in fresh from defeating Whitlock by an 8-4 margin in the
previous round. After that win he said, "I knew that if I lost I'd have been out
of the Premier League, and I'm still there fighting." He aims to beat Painter
and leave the rest to providence.
Painter also had a great penultimate round when he beat world champion Lewis.
He said, "It's been a great experience, whatever happens next week. Playing
top-class players can only be good for me. I'd love another go." He rued the
games lost early on in the Premier League Darts 2012.
