Since it was announced that a film version will be made of the
best-selling erotic novel 50 Shades of Grey, bookmakers such as Paddy Power have
opened betting markets on who will play the two main characters in the movie.
E.L James' novel has climbed fast up the bestsellers list of the New York Times
and is much talked about in every possible circle, among mums in the playground
to academics discussing this book's remarkable success.
In fact, although it's been described as 'mummy porn', 'trashy BDSM' and too hot
for comfort, there is no denying that 50 Shades of Grey has become THE book to
read this year. And a movie version of the page turner would undoubtedly prove
to be just as steamy and controversial, if not more so.
Ryan Gosling as Christian Grey
The role as young, brilliant and intimidating entrepreneur
Christian Grey could be played by a range of Hollywood men, but it seems that
online betting sites like Paddy Power have their hearts set on Ryan Gosling.
The idea was first brought up by Bret Easton Ellis, author of
American Psycho who recently revealed that he'd love to turn James' erotic novel
into a film. Tweeting his thoughts on the plan, Ellis wrote: "In a perfect
world, it would be Ryan Gosling as Christian Grey..."
Since then, odds on Gosling at Grey in a 50 Shades of Grey movie
are 5/1 at sports betting sites such as the Irish gambling giant, Paddy Power.
Others in the 50 Shades of Grey betting run are Mark Ruffalo
and Armie Hammer (both 11/2), Alexander Skarsgard and Ian Somerhalder (both
6/1), Christian Ball (7/1) and Alexander Pettyfer (9/1). Actors such as Ryan
Reynolds and Leonardo Di Caprio stand less of a chance (25/1), while only those
with money to waste should back Daniel Day Lewis with odds of 200/1.
Elizabeth Olsen Favoured for Ana Steele
The role of the naive and awkward Anastasia Steele should also
be a simple enough one to fill, with so many young and beautiful actresses
gracing Hollywood these days.
The big money is on Elizabeth Olsen at odds of 5/1, although
Twilight's leading lady Kristen Stewart - who was said to be the original
concept behind the character of Anastasia - has odds of 6/1 at Paddy Power
sports betting site.
Other ladies in the race:
Alexis Biedel - 6/1
Emily Rossum, Amanda Seyfried - 8/1
Shailene Woodley, Lily Collins, Rihanna - 9/1
Jennifer Lawrence - 12/1
Rooney Mara, Felicity Jones - 14/1
Blake Lively - 20/1
Zooey Deschanel, Cary Mulligan, Scarlett Johansson - 25/1
Miley Cyrus - 33/1
Lindsay Lohan, Antonia Campbell Hughes - 66/1
Saoirse Ronan - 80/1
Amy Huberman, Nadine Coyle, Samantha Mumba - 100/1
