In the London Olympics it was decided to have both men's and women's events
in every sport. Accordingly Women's Boxing was introduced in the Olympic
Games for the first time in 2012. There will be competitions in three
weight categories: Fly (51kg), Light (60kg) and Middle (75kg).
The semi finals line up has been drawn up in each category. In the Olympics
Boxing bronze medals are awarded to both losing semi finalists and therefore all
the women boxers still in the fray are sure to receive an Olympic medal.
Nicola Adams Britain's Boxing Gold Hope
Nicola Adams is the only British boxer left in the competition after two of
her compatriots lost in the quarter finals. She is competing in the fly weight
category and is the favourite for the gold medal.
Adams missed a year with a crippling back injury, but stormed back with a two
world championship silver medals. She was more worried about her back than her
opponents to start with.
So far her back has not shown any signs of any problems. After receiving a
bye in the round of 16, Adams pulverized Bulgarian Stokya Petrova 16-7 in the
quarter finals.
The highlight of that bout was Adams' version of the 'Ali Shuffle' in the
fourth round. After she had emerged winner Adams said, "I had to get an Ali
shuffle in. I've watched so many of his videos, and thought I'll put a sneaky,
cheeky one in there."
In the semi finals Adams will fight Mery Kom from India. Back at home Kom is
also known as Super Mom because she has five-year-old twin boys. Kom has been in
the sport for over a decade and has five World Championship titles to her name.
Though Adams beat Kom by two points the World Championship quarter-finals in
May this year, she has a healthy respect for Kom. "Kom is a good opponent. She's
a five-time world champion and you have to be special to do that. I just hope
that when we box I'll have that little bit extra. It is going to be a close
match."
