American Idol is a reality television competition which has been hugely popular all over the world since it started in 2002 as a spin-off of the British Pop Idol. The show has been franchised all over the world but the American version is popular the world over.
The show, created by Simon Fuller has since become one of the most popular shows in the history of American television and is currently the number one US TV show in the Nielsen ratings and has been for five years in a row.
The aim of the show is to discover America's best singing talent following a series of auditions culminating in in viewer voting on an elimination basis until the winner is crowned. The auditions take place all over America and hopefuls are subjected to honest and sometimes harsh criticism from the judges (music manager Simon Cowell, Grammy winning producer Randy Jackson and Emmy winner Paul Abdul, who has been replaced this season by Elen DeGeneres.)
Past winners in chronological order were Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Hicks, Jordin Sparks, David Cook, and Kris Allen. Interestingly, all of the winners except Sparks are from America's South.
