Britain's Got Talent is a reality TV show run on ITV in the United Kingdom and is a franchise of the Got Talent series created by Reality TV genius, Simon Cowell.
The show is presented by Ant & Dec, and performers get the opportunity to stage their act which involves anything from singing to juggling to some of the most bizarre acts like swallowing and regurgitating billiards balls (and some things are even worse than that). The show's enormous appeal comes from the fact that anybody who has any "talent" has the opportunity to get themselves on television even is that it is for a brief moment and at the risk of being ridiculed by the show's judges, Simon Cowell, Piers Morgan and Amanda Holden.
Britain's Got Talent hopefuls present their act to a live audience in various cities around the UK. The judges can at any time during the performance show their disapproval (and often distaste) by pressing a buzzer which results in a big red cross flashing in front of each judge. Two yes votes will advance the contestant to the next round. The judges then have the job of narrowing down 200 contestants to 24 finalists. A combination of public voting and the judges votes are used to determine the two finalists.
The 2009 show was responsible for bringing the singing spinster, Susan Boyle, to millions of households around the world. She did not win the final, but a platinum record and instant stardom made up for that. Love her or hate her she is a symbol of the success of this format of entertainment.
Britain's Got Talent is not without criticism and has even been labelled a freak show by prominent psychologist newspapers like the Daily Mail have also publicly criticize the handling of the contestants who often have to wait for hours on end without any refreshments and then be subjected to what often amounts to public ridicule.
