Take a group of celebrities, pair them with professional figure skaters, give them each a pair of skates and tell them to learn to skate like pro's. Crazy idea? Probably, but that's exactly what Dancing on Ice has been doing successfully for the last five years and ITV have the ratings to prove the value of this British television. The celebrities and their partners compete over a series of weeks and shows off their skills in front of a panel of judges.
The format has been exported and has been immensely popular in other countries like Italy and Chile, although it flopped in Australia. The show became the third highest rated television show of 2006 in the united kingdom when an impressive thirteen million people watched the final in March.
Britain's ice-skating Olympic champions Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean headline the show and are responsible for training the the dancers. The presenters of the show are Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby.
To further illustrate the popularity of the show, since 2007 Torvill and Dean have gone on tour with some of the celebrity skaters and have filled arenas all over the UK.
Dancing on Ice now airs on a Sunday night during prime time which is little surprise when considering that previous shows really delivered the numbers for ITV when viewership of the season finale peaked at 12.6 million viewers over the two hour slot.
