Golden Globe Awards

The Golden Globe awards have been handed out since 1944 and the ceremony has grown in both stature and public popularity over the years. It is held at the Beverly Hilton hotel, a tradition that has been in place since 1961.

In 2011 the Golden Globes will be presented on January 16, honoring achievements in film and television. The voters for the awards are the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA).

Golden Globes betting can be tricky to get right because film and television awards are separated by genre into Musical or Comedy and Drama categories. Furthermore, because the voters are members of the press as opposed to industry insiders, as is the case with the Oscars, there are usually a few obscure nominees and winners as well.

The Golden Globes ceremony is now shown in more than one hundred and fifty countries around the world, and is the third most popular awards show trailing only the Grammys (in second) and the Oscars, the mother of all awards shows. In fact, a large factor as to why so many people tune in to watch the Golden Globes is because they are a leading indicator as to who will win Academy Awards later on in the year.

Members of the Foreign Press have not been immune to lobbying for votes in the past. The greatest Golden Globe controversy occurred in 1981 when hack actress Pia Zadora amusingly won a Golden Globe for her role in the awful movie "Butterfly". Suspicions were raised because the film hadn't even been released by the time the award was given. It transpired that Zadora's wealthy husband flew voters to his Vegas hotel for a private screening of the film along with lavish treatment before and after. Nevertheless, these days many film and television purists regard the Golden Globes as a more meritorious award than many of the other accolades that seem to be given on a more personal basis.

Major categories for Golden Globes betting include:

  • Best Film - Drama
  • Best Film - Musical or Comedy
  • Best Actor - Drama
  • Best Director
  • Best Actress - Drama
  • Best Drama Series - Television
  • Best Comedy Series - Television
