The Grammys

Winning a Grammy Award, at least in one of the four general field categories, is an ambiguous honour since the recipients of the Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist frequently appear to have won as an ironic gesture, but the Grammy Awards show continues to draw huge television audiences around the world. As a result Grammys betting markets are popular for novelty punters as many of those watching like to have a dabble on whether their favourite performers will win.

The Grammy Awards were originally called the Gramophone Awards (note to young readers: going to Urban Dictionary to find a definition for this word will not work. A gramophone is a mysterious device from antiquity that old people used to listen to the type of music that regularly wins these awards). Grammys, as they are now affectionately known, have been dished out since 1958. The 53rd annual Grammy Awards show will be held in Los Angeles at the Staples Center on February 13, 2011.

You can amaze your friends with the following trivia nugget: The person who has won the most Grammys ever is Georg Solti, who racked up 31 of them before popping his clogs in 1997. Sir Georg, who became a naturalized Brit, was a conductor from Hungary who ultimately received an honorary knighthood in 1971. He was the director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for many years, which makes sense since they hold the record for the musical group with the most Grammys (61 of them). And you thought it would be the Beatles.

In fact U2 is the band with the most Grammys, having won 22 of them, many for dire recent musical efforts, which have led some musicians to question the worth of these awards. When Eddie Vedder received his Grammy he famously asked what the award meant, and then answered his own question by saying "I don't think it means anything."

But let us not be curmudgeons about the Grammy Awards show for it does provide many fun novelty Grammy betting markets, all of which one can access online at reputable sports books. Please review the Odds selector to the right for the latest Grammy Awards betting (if currently available).
