The Rugby League Four Nations series (previously the Rugby league Tri-nations) was expanded to four teams in 2009, when France was invited to participate. Papa New Guinea will be the fourth team in 2010. From 2011, the tournament will become known as the Five Nations, with qualifying tournament winners from the Pacific Nations and Europe joining Australia, New Zealand and England.

The Pacific Cup, involving Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji and the Cook Islands was won by Papua New Guinea which is how they qualified for the 2010 Four Nations. In 2010, the European Nations Cup will decide the fourth participant in the 2011 tournament.

Australia has dominated the Tri Nations tournament as it has the World Cup, and is expected to be tough to beat in the 2010 Four Nations tournament.
