The NRL (National Rugby League) is Australia's Premier Rugby League competition.
Rugby league football is the most dominant winter sport Australia and specifically in the states of New South Wales, Queensland and the Australian Capital Territory. The sport dominates television viewership numbers and topped at 128.5 million TV viewers in 2009, more than any other sport. The National Rugby League (NRL), comprises ten teams from New South Wales, three teams from Queensland, one team each from Victoria, Australian Capital Territory and a New Zealand team.
League was first played in Australia in 1908 and is traditionally seen as a "working man's sport", much like the roots of the game in the North of England.
The National Rugby League is conducted under a partnership agreement with News Limited, and the season kicks off in March and runs until the end of September. The regular season is played on a round robin basis with all sixteen teams playing each other once, and certain trams playing each other twice based on pool system. Eight teams qualify for the finals which is operated on a knockout basis.
The NRL Grand Final is one of Australasia's major sporting events and cities like Sydney come to a standstill on Grand Final day. Fans in Great Britain take a keen interest in Australian Rugby League because of the strength of the Australian game and the rivalry between England and Australia who play regular test matches.
