Super League is the top-level professional rugby league football club competition of Europe. As a result of sponsorship from engage Mutual Assurance the competition is currently officially known as the engage Super League. The League features fourteen teams: twelve from England, one from Wales and one from France, which compete from February to October.

The Super League was founded in March 1996 and was also the first time that the English season switched from winter to summer. The teams are mostly based in Great Britain, however, initial intentions were to build a European league. French Rugby club Paris Saint Germain took part in the first season and played in the very first Super League match ever, but they only remained in the competition for one season. The league was completely English until the English until Catalans Dragons joined in 2006. Another International team, 2009, the Celtic Crusaders from Wales, joined in 2009.

The format is as follows. Each team plays 27 rounds between February to September - 12 home and 132 away. In addition they play in the Magic Weekend game at a neutral venue. The top eight at the end of the regular season compete in the play-offs, with the Grand Final determining the champions which is played at Old Trafford.

The dominant teams are St Helens, Leeds and Bradford. The winner of each years Premiership play against their counterpart from Australia's' NRL in the World Club Challenge.

  • 2009 - Leeds Rhinos 18–10 St Helens
